On The Brink

The selection of the Papanul centre, J. C. Hawthorne, as the replacement for P. V. Smith (Marist) in the Canterbury Rugby League team to play Wellington on Saturday comes at rather an inopportune time for Hawthorne. He has scored 99 points (three tries and 45 goals) in club football this season and would surely have become the first senior Rugby League

player to reach 100 points in club matches had he been able to play against Papanul on Saturday. Hawthorne leads from I. T. Drayton (Hornby, 89), J. E. Bond (Kaiapoi, 82), G. J. Rosanowski (Linwood. 79) and A. Tuuta (Sydenham. 71). In all matches Drayton has scored 125 points. Drayton and Rosanowski will also be in Wellington with the representative team.
