Bracketed Pair First, Second
The Riccarton trainer, D. J. Thistoll, saddled the bracketed pair, Cosmetic and Not Guilty, to run first and second in their race debuts in the Lyndhurst Two-Year-Old Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday.
ThistoH also figured as a part-owner of the runner-up, Not Guilty, which gave point to his rueful jest that he should have scratched Cosmetic!
Cosmetic, a well-grown Blueskin II filly, is a first racing venture for Miss K. and Mr D. Carey, of Christchurch.
In the hands of D. N. Hadfield, she was clear quickly and stayed beyond challenging range of the others in the straight, winning by two lengths. Not Guilty finished determinedly for her second, a length in front of Baloney. Farmer’s Girl, the win favourite, was fourth, and had her chance. Divisions of the Maiden Stakes were won by close relations of good winners. Belloringa, a half-sister to the successful two-year-old Gay Doctor, was in front all the way in the first division,
winning by a length from Kai Bank, which, was inclined to run greenly. Scorn, a stablemate of Kai Bank, and a younger brother of Shakes, broke through for a well-earned first win in the second division.
Ridden by the stable horseman, J. A. Messent, Scorn passed Somara and Fibber near the furlong and drew out to win by a length and a half from the strongly-fin-ishing Totara Valley. Jaykay also outfinished Somara for third.
