Riccarton Hacks Not Tested

Tsunami and Danny Kaye were impressive winners for Riccarton stables in hack races at Ashburton on Saturday.

Among Tsunami’s supporters in the Mayfield Hack Handicap were a group of Japanese businessmen whose interest in the Tsaoko colt was aroused by his Japanese name. Tsunami had more than a name to recommend him, but those who had seen him scramble to a nose victory at Oamaru a few days earlier might not have ' been prepared for the ease of his win this time. Tsunami followed Lady Sabaean into the straight, and then pulled away with ease to win by two lengths. It was Tsunami’s third win for Mr J. R. Piteaithly and for C. C. McCarthy’s stable. We’ll Find Out eaught the little-fancied Lady Sabaean close to home to take second place. Elvin Bay. Sandy Man, and Tracy’s Comet were the best of the others. Danny Kaye completed a good day for the favourites with an all-the-way win in the Moreton Hack Handicap. Kaye's second race after a spell, and he could find further Improvement yet for Mr D. Leslie. Danny Kaye, a showy, attractive colt by Copenhagen 11. was ridden by B. A. Edens, who is an apprentice in the stable of the colt’s trainer, G. S. Barr. Senator Jack, which had trailed to the straight, was beaten for finishing speed by both Research and Quick Flight, both long shots.
