Horrified By Hat

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON. If one wants to be an umpire at Wimbledon, the world’s premier tennis tournament, one has to wear the right hat. So a former British Foreign Office clerk, Mr Bertie Bowron, aged 58, found on Friday when he strolled on to the court to umpire a match in a white French beret. Officials looked aghast and promptly told Mr Bowron, an umpire of international repute, to find something less dazzling. Reluctantly, he obeyed and later appeared on the court in a brown straw trilby headgear that seemed to satisfy his superiors. This is the second time that Mr Bowron has had hat trouble at Wimbledon. Two years ago he was criticised for wearing a black beret while umpiring a match. He was so angry he boycotted the championships last year.
