BOTTLES, CANS FOR LOSERS
'N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) TAMWORTH (New South Wales). Empty beer bottles and beer cans were thrown at the British Rugby League players in the final minutes of a hectic match which they lost, 13-15, to Northern New South Wales yesterday.
Some of the players threw bottles and cans back into the crowd as the British winger, B. Jones, was being cautioned for rough play. The match often was out of the control of the referee who eight times cautioned the British players. G. Crewdson and the skipper, K. Roberts, were cautioned for fighting in the first half in which several local players were also cautioned.
In the second half there were a number of bad incidents, one of the worst being when the Northern winger,
D. Shearer, was kicked on the ground by an English forward. In spite of the many cautions most of the illegal play went unnoticed by the referee. After the match the British team maiager, Mr W. Spaven, said: “It certainly was a scrappy game.” Roberts said that the referee was to blaipe for the way play developed. “He should have done something about it as soon as it started,” he said.
