Landing Gear Failed

(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. June 26. A light aircraft carrying Captain E. Milroy, who is investigating the Kaitawa disaster for the Marine Department, made a crash landing at New Plymouth Airport on Saturday. Captain Milroy was on the way to New Plymouth to investigate the Kaiapoi's breakdown off Cape Egmont. The plane, a Golden Coast Airlines Piper Apache, skidded on its nose after part of its landing gear failed to

lock and the flaps failed to operate.

A fire engine, an ambulance, and police and Transport Department cars which had been summoned by the control tower stood by. The pilot (Mr A. Hackston) and Captain Milroy, the only passenger, were not hurt. The New Plymouth branch manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, Mr R. Mander, said Captain Milroy had

seen the vessel in Westport and had flown to New Plymouth to inspect it again in view of the list which developed after the engine broke down.
