Educational Institute Ball
“Teaching of French in schools,” was the theme chosen for the annual ball of the North Canterbury branch of the Educational Institute, attended by 630 guests in the Winter Garden.
Colourful posters depicting all aspects of the theme were prominently displayed in the ballroom. The scenes were variations on the French
symbols “liberty, equality and fraternity.” Guests were welcomed by the president of the branch (Mr R. F. Armstrong) and Mis Armstrong, and the chairman of the ball committee (Mr C. L. Martin) and Mrs Martin. Mrs Armstrong chose a full-length, sleeveless, rose red gown in crystal nylon designed on straight lines and featuring a deep row of black sequins edging the high - neckline in front and continuing to the scooped neckline at the back. Mrs Martin wore a gown in pale pink crystalline brocaded satin. This full-length
frock, styled on the empire line, fell from the high waistline to a gentle flare in the skirt. Mrs Billcliff, wife of the past-president of the branch, chose a full-length gown of burgandy lurex with a back floating panel falling from the waistline.
The committee which organised the ball comprised.— Chairman, Mr C. L. Martin; secretary-treasurer, Miss M. J. M. Robinson; committee, Miss M. J. Hyde, Messrs W. A. Sparkes, B. E. Hansen, I. Smith.
