The year 1961 saw the first small first-year enrolment of engineering students; currently there are about 400 undergraduates and over 50 post-graduate students. A first-year intake of some 300 is envisaged for 1970. Materials Science is taught to all engineering students. There are currently two members of staff involved (at present attached to the Department of Civil Engineering) together with one other concerned with the forming of materials. It is envisaged that Materials Science is a field which will grow in importance; it will be the responsibilitv of the successful applicant to develop teaching and research in this field, which is intended to be more broadly interpreted than Physical Metallurgy. which it includes.
