9—3 Win Could Have Been Bigger

"The Press" Special Service

TIMARU.

With its attacking forces well marshalled by the astute L. Legge at first five-eighths, Christchurch Boys’ High School beat Timaru Boys’ High School, 9-3 yesterday—and should have won by a lot more points.

Fraser Park was swept by a strong south-westerly wind which favoured Timaru in the first half. However, even in the first 40 minutes Christchurch was the better side and led 3-0 at half-time. The visitors poured on the pressure throughout the second half and was held up just short of the line on several occasions.

The Christchurch half-back, D. Phillipson, and Legge played with good understand-

ing and Legge broke past the defence in some fast penetrating runs.

The powerful H. Joseph also showed up weak tackling by Timaru and started several dangerous attacks from second five-eighths. Lewis Outstanding

Christchurch owed a lot to the full-back, W. Lewis, in the first half. Often the ball was kicked straight through to Lewis and he showed his appreciation by handling immaculately and kicking accurately. A. Boulton was a willing leader in the Christchurch forwards and he was well supported by the lock, R. Anderson, who was the best jumper in the line-outs. Timaru’s hooker, W. J. Brown, had a successful day, winning several tight-heads at crucial stages. Brown had very worthy support from P. J. McKenzie who was perhaps the best of the Timaru forwards.

The right-wing, R. Tayler, was easily the best of the Timaru backs and beat the defence badly in one try-scor-ing run. I. Armstrong scored for Christchurch and the other points were from a penalty by Lewis and a dropped goal by Legge. In the second fifteen match, Christchurch won, 1716.
