Newcombe Joins List Of Fallen Seeds

LONDON. The seeds continue to fall in the Wimbledon tennis championships.
Yesterday it was the turn of the 22-year-old Australian, J. D. Newcombe, the No. 5 seed, who was worn down in a sparkling third round marathon of high quality by his countryman, K. Fletcher.
So Newcombe joins on the sidelines two other seeded men, F. Stolle (Australia) and C. Graebner (United States).
Fletcher was one of the “rebels” who, in 1964, defied the Australian Lawn Tennis Association’s ban on early overseas play. He severed his allegiance to Australian tennis and has
since made a new life for himself in Hong Kong. On his eighth world tour the 26-year-old Fletcher is playing as well as ever and has now reached the last 16 in the men’s singles at Wimbledon.
After missing three set points in the opening set and trailing by two sets to love, he tenaciously edged home winner by 8-10, 4-6, 6-3, 64, 6-3. The match, the best of the week so far, thrilled a huge crowd on the No. 1 court for 2hr 35min. Fletcher next meets India’s leading player, J. Mukerjea. The top-seeded R. Emerson, of Australia, continues to show the day-to-day consistency which won him the title for the last two years. He removed a rugged opponent yesterday in the Puerto Rican, C. Pasarell, the United States indoor champion, by 7-5, 6-2, 7-5.
Australia held a dominant position at the end of the men’s third round, with six players among the last 16. The United States had three representatives, while Britain, Denmark, France, Holland, India, South Africa and Spain each had one.
