National Parks

Sir, —In spite of Mr Wilson’s selfish attitude national parks and tourist facilities are here to stay, and to say that tourism is contrary to national park principles shows ignorance. What is lacking, however, is a basis of understanding between empire-building park boards and those entrusted with using the tourist allocation to the best advantage. It certainly is time that co-ordin-ated planning and development principles were established for the good of all concerned. At Mount Cook tourism preceded a national parks establishment, now a high-class hotel is dovetailed not unattractively into the area, and with it came accommodation, communications, transport, electricity, etc., amenities which no board could ever hope to achieve by itself. Thousands now visit this area, and others likewise which would have been accessible but to a hardy few if it had not been for tourism and its accompanying facilities.—Yours, ete., A. MENITY.
