Jury Service
Sir,—lf a married woman volunteered for jury service, could she turn it down at the last moment? Does a juryman or woman have to be a property owner or just a citizen? If a man has had a conviction or gone bankrupt in his own business, can he still be called on a jury?—Yours, etc.,
June 22,1966. [Mr J. L. W. Gerken, Sheriff of Canterbury, says: “Any woman is exempt from serving on any jury if she notifies the Sheriff in writing that she does not wish to serve, and she may do this up to the time she is actually called to serve as a juror. A juror does not have to be a property owner to be qualified. A person convicted of
any offence punishable by death or imprisonment for a term of three years or more or who is an undischarged bankrupt is not qualified to serve on any jury.”]
