Art Galleries
Sir, —Near the end of H.J.S.’s interesting article on Henry Bell’s exhibition, now in the Durham street Art Gallery, is a plaintive aside: “Disquieting thought, how many painters are now showing in Dunedin in preference to Christchurch!” Now Dunedin’s Public Art Gallery Society, under new directorship, is running a vigorous year’s programme of “live” exhibitions by artists of many different approaches, New Zealand and overseas, without neglecting their fine permanent collection. This is proving attractive to artists with work for sale; and whereas this year exhibitors have been invited, no doubt next year the gallery will merely have to choose. One gallery with sufficient space and staff to do all exhibiting has always seemed better to me than Christchurch’s (and now Timaru’s) clumsy dual set-up. Surely all artistic {activities grow stronger under one roof.—Yours, etc., A. A. DEANS. I Peel Forest, June 22, 1966.
