UNIVERSITY CONCERT
Anson Austin Recital
In the University Hall yesterday afternoon, Mr Anson Austin sang for the last time before going to London to join the 8.8. C. Singers. For several years now he has been a tenor soloist with choral societies here and throughout New Zealand, always proving to be a thoroughly reliable artist In addition to the sterling value of his work he has been a co-operative and pleasant colleague whose place will, indeed, be hard to fill. He sang four Elizabethan songs and four of Castelnuovo(Tedesco’s setting of Shakespearean songs with his customary even production, shown in clean line of vowels and in liveliness of tone throughout the whole range of his voice and at every level of volume. The words were always easy to hear and he phrased them with artistic sensibility and with meticulous attention to correctness Mr Maurice Till was the accompanist . and, in the second part of the concert he joined with Mr Bretislav Novotny in a superb performance of Grieg’s Sonata in C Minor for violin and piano. This was a sparkling performance of a work of graci-
ous and lyric charm. To it both artists brought heightened and refined imagination as well as shining technical polish. It was supple playing directed by intuitive accord to confident and authoritative interpretation. -C.F3.
