Cephas Best At Levin
"The Press" Special Service LEVIN.
Cephas showed with a sound final trial at Levin yesterday that if he finds reasonable ground at Hastings he will be very hard to beat in the hack distance event. The course proper, which was cutting out. was open 35ft from the rails. Cephas (W. D. Skelton) beat Lord Snowden (J. K. Searle) soundly over seven furlongs in Imin 38)sec, the first three in 40 3-ssec and the first halfmile in 54 4-ssec. Lord Snowden had much the worse of the weights, and did not appear to be working well at any stage. Fremont (K. Coombe) and L’Arc (P. Bevan), which are engaged at both the Egmont and the Hastings meeings, worked soundly, although slowly, tn their final trials.
The pair, which will start at Egmont, were to have run half a mile together, but L’Arc pulled his way to a lead of almost 10 lengths approaching the peg and Fremont was not asked to make up the lost ground. L’Arc ran the half-mile in 57 sec, the final three furlongs in 40 l-ssec. and appeared to have something in reserve all the way.
