(N Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright)
WESTERHAM (Kent), June 22. Within an hour of the opening of Sir Winston Churchill’s former home, Chartwell, at Westerham, Kent, today, 1000 people had paid to enter the grounds and a long queue had formed outside. When the gates were opened after lunch, the new car park of several acres was quickly filled and emergency parking had to be provided in a nearby field. When the house and gardens closed for the day, more than 2500 persons had been admitted to the grounds and more than 1300 toured the house. Inside, visitors saw the home preserved as it was in i the 19305, with much of the
original furniture and fittings. There are examples of Sir Winston Churchill’s own paintings.
A three-room museum, converted from three guest bedrooms, contains maps, uniforms and documents retelling Sir Winston Churchill’s role in world affairs.
