Sanctions Affecting Rhodesia
(N.Z.PA. Reuter—Copyright)
LONDON, June 23
Rhodesia’s economy is showing fresh cracks because of British-led sanctions against the rebel colony, Commonwealth envoys were told in London yesterday.
Mr Arthur Bottomley, the Commonwealth Secretary, produced convincing evidence
about the mounting worries of Rhodesian industrialists and farmers, said Commonwealth diplomats. He was reporting at a private one-hour meeting of the Commonwealth’s 23-member committee for sanctions against Rhodesia. In a progress report on exploratory talks in Salisbury between British and Rhodesian officials, he left the impression that Britain saw little sign so far of a satisfactory result.
Mr Bottomley again assured the envoys that there would be no sell-out of the Rhodesian Africans’ interests through concessions to Mr Smith’s regime. The committee discussed ways of helping Zambia survive the economic impact of a complete trade ban against neighbouring Rhodesia.
