Punjab Preparing For Division

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CHANDIGARH, • June 23.

The Government of Punjab State resigned yesterday as a prelude to the division of the Punjab into two separate linguistic States.

The Chief Minister, Ram Kishan, said that the resignation of his 23-month-old Ministry had been tendered voluntarily to pave the way for the smooth reorganisation of the State.

The area will split into a Punjabi speaking State, which

will have a predominantly Sikh population, and a Hindi speaking State of Hariana, whose population will be maily Hindu. Some hilly tracts will be merged with the neighbouring State of Himachal Pradesh. The Indian Government’s decision to divide the State results from language rivalries between the Punjabi and I Hindi speaking populations, and the threat by the Sikh leader, Sant Fateh Singh, to commit suicide by self-immo-lation if a separate Punjabispeaking State was not I created. *
