QUI NHON CONDITIONS
Improvements Being Made (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 21. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said tonight it was not within the power of the Government to alter conditions under which New Zealand’s surgical unit worked at Qui Nhon Public Hospital, in South Vietnam.
He announced that the supply machinery of the Health Department had been put at the disposal of the unit so that the supply of scarce items could be planned on a regular basis. The attention of the Vietnamese authorities had been drawn to conditions at the hospital from time to time—particularly after the recent visit of Dr. D. P. Kennedy, the Director-General of Health.
“Improvements in the way of partitions and fittings and re-painting have already taken place, but it is true that conditions still fall a long way short of New Zealand standards,” he said.
But, Mr Holyoake added, it had to be remembered that the hospital was in a war theatre.
