Head Of Pirate Radio Shot Dead

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, June 22. A British pirate radio chief was shot dead last night at a house in Essex a day after a group of commando-style raiders took over, at dead of night, a radio station he ran on a disused fort in the Thames estuary.

He was Reg Calvert, aged 37, manager of Radio City, Which beamed its programmes on non-stop pop music at Britain from a Second World War fort, near London. The boarding party which seized the fort early on Monday morning was led by a woman, according to some reports. The raiders put the radio transmitters out of action and Radio City has

been off the air for the last two days. The raiders were reported to have acted in a dispute over ownership of a transmitter in the station. Mr Calvert bought Radio City in 1964 from the pop singer, Screaming Lord Such, who stood as a candidate for teen-agers against the Prime Minister (Mr Wilson) in the General Election. Last year Radio City was taken over by Radio Caroline —another independent station —and Mr Calvert joined the new management
