Paintings By Henry Bell

An exhibition of 25 paintings by Henry Bell, a New Zealander who left Dunedin in 1955 for Queensland to grow pineapples and paint, will be held in the Durham Street Art Gallery next week. Bell, aged 39. trained at the Dunedin Art School and held his first exhibition in 1954. Since then he has had six one-man shows in New Zealand and three in Australia, and his work is represented in several public collections.

Mr J. D. Charlton Edgar, director of the Dunedin Art Gallery, refers to Bell as a “sensitive and imaginative painter with a deep sensitivity to things seen and felt. It is this coloratura and expression of emotive reaction, coupled with an expert handling of his medium (oil on masonite) that makes the work of Henry Bell so distinctive.”

The paintings, mostly small works, will be hung in part of the north gallery; the 20/20 Vision exhibition will fill the south gallery.
