Farm Costs
Sir,—There is much to be said for “P.O.W.’s” criticism of a Parliament dominated by party warfare. Political scientists will discredit the idea of independent members, however, and perhaps with reason. Party politics does provide broad policy for the people at large to choose, and it also contributes to the stability of our Government. However, the original idea behind parties was that they should organise public opinion, not just stamp it out of two moulds. Unfortunately, the latter is happening today, and therefor* th* argument for
more independent opinions is definitely valid. It is interesting to note that one of our major parties, Social Credit, does advocate relative independence of action for its members of Parliament (when they arrive!). At the same time, its basic policy and organisation are generally developed on normal lines. Perhaps the ballot slips will be favoured by dissatisfied “independent” voters, —Yours, etc.,
