VIGOUR SURPRISES
(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH.
Vigour managed a major surprise when he won the Palmerston North Handicap, main event on the first day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s winter meeting on Saturday.
Vigour finished too well for the top-weight Lei, over the last furlong. Gillin, the favourite, finished gamely from the middle for third and Lady Wild was next ahead of Blue Defaulter, Big Bill and ReEcho. The favourite Gus was never tested in the Stewards’ Handicap. He won with plenty in hand from Bijali, which finIsed well. Feurig was third and Kintyre fourth. The weather was overcast and the attendance good. The track was heavy.
