"The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN. Pahi maintained his unbroken record as a jumper when he outstayed the wellsupported Loristan in the Otago Hack Hurdles at Wingatui on Saturday.
Pahl, unbeaten in three starts •t the Dunedin meeing, now has 'four successive wins as a hurdler on his record. Trained at Riverton by J. H. Cleaver who races the Kurdistan gelding in partnership with his wife, Pahl moved up to loin the early pacemaker, Ataarangi, six furlongs from home and from there was always travelling like a winner. Lorastan was a length and a quarter back at the finish, six lengths clear of Knight with a similar margin to Side Saddle. Ataarangi weakened to fifth ahead of Acron and Red Harken. The only casualty was Belloch, which lost his rider at the six furlongs when disputing the lead. WELL DESERVED First Watch, a minor placegetter on the earlier days of the meeting, scored a well deserved
win In the Dunedin Hack Steeplechase. Mr L. R. C. Macfarlane’s Red Marlin gelding was never far from the pace. He hooked the second of the double near the six furlongs, but soon recovered and after disputing the pace with Captain Morgan drew clear over the last three furlongs to win by five lengths. Tidal Rip was the best of First Watch’s rivals. He beat the lightly supported Barney by seven lengths for second. Captain Morgan, the early pacemaker, was fourth ahead of Bador, King's Tax and Linred. The well-supported Jolly Fox fell near the mile when handy, and the top-weight, Bayline, fell at the first fence. At a subsequent inquiry into interference near the furlong, Barney was relegated to fourth and Captain Morgan was promoted to third.
