Heavy Rain Affects Stradbroke Handicap

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)

BRISBANE. Heavy rain has completely upset calculations on the £N.Z.BOOO Stradbroke Handicap, which will be run at Eagle Farm today. More than six inches of rain has fallen since Wednesday, and If there was further heavy rain last night the stewards will inspect the track this morning to decide whether the meeting should be postponed. The going is certain to be heavy, and bookmakers are taking no chances with horses which have proved themselves mudlarks. The Sydney three-year-old, Redcap, has firmed to 5/1 favourite for the race since the rain started, while the previous favourite, Marltana, which has never raced on a heavy track, is now quoted at 6/1. There Is little New Zealand Interest In the Stradbroke. but a strong band of New Zealandbred stayers will contest Monday’s cup. Five candidates for the twomile Brisbane Cup to be run on Monday will have their final trials today. They include two fancied New Zealand-bred horses, Empyreus and Pyramus. Empvreus will meet other cup candidates, Craftsman, Striking Force and Tea Biscuit, in the 194-furlong O'Shea Stakes, while Pyramus, which was an early favourite for the £N.Z.B(H>O cup. will contest the one-mile Eagle Farm Stakes.
