TOURIST HOTELS
Prospects ‘Bright’ (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 9. Prospects for the Tourist Hotel Corporation this year were bright, the secretary of the corporation (Mr J. E. Hopkirk) said today. Occupancy in the corporation's hotels to the end of April increased 7 per cent on the same period in the previous 12 months, Mr Hopkirk said. The £181,717 interest on the corporation’s capital remitted by the Government would reduce the corporation’s loss by more than half, he said.
New hotels were in full operation and the corporation expected a profit this year of about £BO,OOO and lower administrative expenses. “Without the attraction of places such as Waitomo, Milford, the Hermitage and Franz Josef much of the country’s tourist trade would be lost to New Zealand. “Overseas visitors spend over half a million pounds in the corporation’s hotels and this is only a portion of the amount spent by these visitors in New Zealand,” said Mr Hopkirk.
