“No Discrimination To Help Air N.Z.”
(Neu> Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 9. The Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) dismissed a suggestion that an increased allocation of overseas funds be made available to travellers who booked and flew with Air New Zealand.
Dr. A. M. Finlay (Opp., Waltakere) had asked Mr Lake if he would consider this move.
Mr Lake told the House that to use exchange control to discriminate between carriers of a different nationality operating through New Zealand
would be unethical and could lead to retaliatory action by other countries.
He said every member of Parliament should urge people to use the country’s own airline.
To Mr H. L. J. May (Opp., Porirua), Mr Lake said it was Government policy to instruct officials to travel Air New Zealand.
Anything which would help the overseas funds situation would have Government support, but the use of exchange control was not regarded as a step which should be taken.
