SCHOOLS’ ESSAY

Water-Safety Subject

In an attempt to draw more public attention to water safety, the New Zealand Water Safety Council is conducting its second annual essay competition. The theme is: “Precautions you should take when enjoying your favourite water sport.” It is open to school pupils in forms one, two, three, and four. Circulars have been sent to all primary and secondary schools in the Canterbury Education Board’s district and to 91 private schools. Form one and two entries will be judged separately from forms three and four essays. National section winners will receive £2O, second place-getters will get £lO and £5 will be given for third. There will also be 14 consolation prizes of £2 each. This year, the Canterbury Water Safety Committee will award prizes to the best three entries in each section before sending them to Wellington for the national competition. The local panel consists of Messrs B. B. Blackmore, G. Elmslie and L. J. Coughlan.

Entries will cTose on June 30 and the judges will take into consideration appreciation and general knowledge of water safety rules. The national prize-winners will be announced on August 12.
