£14,000 Gymnasium The Burnside High School expects soon to begin a £14,000 gymnasium, measuring 96 feet by 60 feet, partly financed by debentures of parents. About £lOOO will be taken up immediately, and other funds have been raised by the Parent-Teacher Association. The Audit Office has approved an allocation from pupils’ activities accounts, provided this object is mentioned in the school prospectus. First Novel “The Red Mountain,” a first novel by the managing editor of “Church and People” (Mr P. W. Bates), was published in England this week. It deals with the experiences of three New Zealand prison-ers-of-war who are making their way to Switzerland after the Italian armistice in September. 1943. Mr Bates was formerly in daily journalism in New Plymouth. Cool Day Yesterday in Christchurch was cloudy, cool, but not unpleasant. The temperature at Harewood, 44 degrees at 9 a.m., rose to 49 degrees at noon and to 50 degrees by 3 p.m. The same reading showed on the Government Life building at 4.30 p.m. By that time the light southerly wind had dropped almost completely. Drinking In Space When the days of luxury space travel finally arrive, they will bring with them a rather annoying side effect for wine fanciers, according to the magazine, “Vintage.” In an article on wine in space, the magazine says that champagne would turn into a thick foamlike shaving cream in space, and would have to be eaten from an ice-cream cone. On the other hand, half an hour in space would be enough to turn a rough new wine into a rare vintage: but too long, say a day or so, would make it deteriorate into vinegar or thick, sticky tar.—London, June 8. Practical Building Burnside High School school certificate woodwork pupils in the past have erected a school shop and a horticultural equipment store. This year’s course will erect a sports equipment store. The school board last evening congratulated the instructor on providing these practical exercises which, at the same time, benefit the school.
