Moorhouse Avenue Traffic Lights

Sir, —I deplore the desire of F. W. Gunz to retain Moorhouse avenue as a speedway. Before the lights were installed at Selwyn, Antigua, and Montreal streets, residents of south Christchurch were denied reasonable access to the city. Most motorists using the avenue deliberately failed to give way, and even now some still speed through the red lights. I cannot see how synchronization of these lights could reasonably be arranged to save these impatb ent outlaws more than a few precious seconds. As a regular user of Moorhouse avenue, I find the present arrangement both sensible and fair. There are bound to be fewer injuries, and, when F. W. Gunz and his friends .have had time to cool down, there should be less broken glass to sweep up dally.—Yours, etc. VARIAN J. WILSON. June 8, 1966.
