Project Mohole

Sir, —“E.W.H.” seems to think Project Mohole and space exploration are a waste of money, “socially useless.” May I ask “E.W.H.”: do cosmetics, liquor, and cigarettes “feed the hungry and heal the sick?” Yet each of thpse luxuries alone costs America several times as much each year as her entire space budget. And are these “socially useful?” Obviously, no. Indeed this is the reason why the “have” nations are unjust, not because they fire “rockets to the moon.” “E.W.H.” is attacking the wrong thing. The gains from current scientific research are incalculable; space exploration alone has revolutionised communications, weather forecasting, metallurgy, even medicine, just to name a few “social” gains; these alone would be enough to justify the space programme in “practical” terms. The same applies to all scientific endeavour; it is denying man’s intelligence and fulfilment to suggest halting ambitious research.—Yours, etc., S.W.M. June 7, 1966.
