McIntyre To Sing At Covent Garden
(By The London Correspondent o! "The Press’’)
Donald Mclntyre, the former Auckland bass who is now a member of the Sadler’s Wells Opera Company will sing two principal roles at Covent Garden next season. He will sing Pizzaro in Beethoven’s “Fidelio” in January, 1967, and Barak in a new production of Strauss’s “Frau Ohne Schatten.” Both will be conducted by Georg Solti, the brilliant Hungarian conductor. This will be Mclntyre’s first appearance at Covent Garden. At present he is singing with the Scottish Opera Company as Mephistopheles in “Faust” and Hunding in “Die Walkure,” and has recieved fine notices from national critics. The company is playing in Edinburgh following a short season in Glasgow, and will stage its operas in Aberdeen.
In October, Mr Mclntyre will be at the Sadler’s Wells singing in Benjamin Britten’s “Gloriana.”
But before then he will be singing at the Edinburgh Festival in a performance of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony
with the Scottish National Orchestra. He recently sang the bass solo part in this work in a performance conducted by Leonard Bernstein in the Albert Hall, London, which was televised by the 8.8. C. and relayed internationally by Telstar satellite. Mclntyre has also taken part in a recording of the symphony made with conductor Bernstein. Bernstein’s appearances in London excited a lot of attention in musical circles. Donald Mclntyre’s opinion of the conductor was: “He was marvellous in rehearsal ... a bit flashy in performance.”
