“Dumky” Trio
Dvorak’s “Dumky” Trio to be played at the University of Canterbury lunch-time concert this Thursday is an interesting work for a variety of reasons. It is in six movements, each of which is a “dumka.” This is the Ukranian word for something akin to “lament.” The trio is not, however, a solemn work: it has been described as “outstanding for its wealth of themes, its colourful scoring and its varied treatment of the idea of melancholy.” Two members of the Prague Quartet of the University of Canterbury, Karel Pribyl (violin) and Zdenek Kbnicek (cello) will be joined by Maurice Till (piano) in this performance. Already in the series of concerts the emphasis on music by Czechoslovakian composers is being fully appreciated by staff, students and those members of the public who take advantage of the 40-minute programmes offered.
