HAWKS FIRST WIN OF SEASON NARROW

Hawks had their first win of the season when they narrowly beat Rangers by five goals to four in a Christchurch Cup ice hockey match play ed at the Indoor Ice Rink last night.

The ice was slow, and the game was dull in the first period, both sides lacking in

punch. Hawks had the better teamwork, but their finish was poor, while Rangers again relied on solo runs for their goals. Both sides netted once in the first period. Play was brighter in the second period, with Rangers taking an early two-goal lead. Hawks fought back and drew level. Play evened out asain in the last minutes of the period, and both sides scored once more.

Play was ragged again for most of the final period, with Hawks having a slight edge, but it was only in the last few seconds that Hawks pressed home a sustained attack to score the winning goal. Scorers were:—Rangers: D. Fisher 2, J. Dougherty 2. Hawks: N. Hole 2, G. Bainton M. Wickes, C. Robinson. Referees: Messrs B. Lester and H. van der Velden.
