AGAINST A-TESTS

‘Peace’ Ketch Made Ready (N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) SYDNEY, May 11. A group of pacifists in Sydney hopes to have the first of a fleet of “peace” ships in the Pacific in time for the first French atomic tests. The tests are tentatively scheduled for Bastille Day, July 14. A spokesman for the Committee Against Atomic Testing, said two ketches had been built at a secret location in Sydney, and had certificates of seaworthiness.

The name, location and sailing date of the ketch, which would carry a crew of six, was being kept secret. The plan was for the ketch to slip out to sea quietly, to elude any attempts by the French to intercept her, sail into the fall-out area, and observe all practical precautions, in an attempt to prevent the tests.
