Defence
Sir, —Your correspondent in Saturday’s issue rightly points to the difference between the war way, which kills and lays waste, and the Christian way of good will and caring for one’s fellowmen. Blake's line. “Where mercy, love, and pity dwell there God is dwelling, too," with his insight expressed in “For everything that lives is holy” is a true pointer, as is the modern poet, Auden’s line, “We must love one another or die.” The author of Christianity has never been without witnesses, because
truth finds its echo in the human heart. —Yours, etc., N. BECK. March 14. 1966. Sir, —It is noted with interest that the two letters on this subject on Saturday, while condemning fighting, do not ask for permission to either write to or go and talk to the aggressors in this South-east Asian war. They, like one or two more of their kind, are happy to shelter behind our way of life, while our young men do the fighting. I wonder if they would be so keen to turn the other cheek if our country were being overrun by the Asian hordes. No-one likes war, but those who can see a little further than the garden fence fight now, in preference to peace at any price with the ultimate loss of our freedom and democratic way of life. The show of strength, courage, and determination now, with unity of purpose on the home front, will turn the tide for the future —Yours etc., F.W.P.F. March 14, 1966.
