Ashburton Electorate
Sir, —Because of the democratic method used, the National Party will select an outstanding candidate to represent all, from the large number of persons offering. If “Progress" is a financial member of the party he will surely have his say in this selection. The war has now been over for 20 years, and as the National Party favours young, vigorous candidates, it might well select a candidate who was too young to serve overseas. The drift of population to the North Island has caused electorates to become larger. With the stabilisation of seats, many people now living outside the electorate could be re-included in it. Over the years, a large sum of Government money has been spent on irrigation schemes and, taken in conjunction with other expenditure, I consider, unlike Mr Davidson, that the Ashburton electorate has been fairly treated. —Yours, etc., M. R. MACDONALD. March 13, 1966.
