W. Titterton (C.M.G., F.A.A.). Among the posts available are: Senior Fellowships Senior Research FeMowsMps Fellowships Research Fellowships The Department is welt equipped with a 12 MeV Tandem electrostatic accelerator, a 2 MeV Van de Graaff generator and a 1.2 MeV Cockcroft-Walton machine. Two precision particle spectrometers, a Buechner spectograph, crystal, solid state, gas and emulsion detectors with associated multichannel recording equipment are available for use with these machines. An IBM 1620 Computer is currently available for data reduction, with an IBM 360 on order. The main fields of work are in nuclear structure studies. The salary and range of a Senior FeiJlow are determined within the limits d01A7600-8920 and of a Fellow within the limits d01A5620-7600. Appointment iis made for an initial period of five years: thereafter he may be reappointed until retiring age. A Senior Follow is entitled to one year’s study leave on full pay, plus a contribution towards travel and other expenses. In every six years of service, and a Fellow to one year’s leave in every seven years. The salary of a Senior Research Fellow is determined In the range d01A6780-8100, and of a Research Fellow in the range lA4BOO-6300. Appointment is for three years, with a possible extension to five years. Superannuation is on the F.S.S.U. pattern with supplementary benefits. Reasonable travel expenses are paid, both ways in the case of temporary posts, and assistance with housing is provided in an appointment from outside Canberra. In addition to the posts referred to above, a number of scholarships is available for students, who have completed a M.Sc. degree or who have had outstanding results in their Honours B.Sc. examinations. The scholarships are tenable for two or three years, and the basic allowance is d0!A2330 per annum; married scholars wtlh dependent children may be granted an additional allowance of dolA7oo per annum in respect of the first child and a further dolA2oo per annum for each other child. LA TROBE UNIVERSITY LABORATORY MANAGER, CHEMISTRY LA TROBE UNIVERSITY IS seeking a Laboratory Manager to assist the foundation professors of Chemistry to establish the Chemistry facilities in the School of Physical Sciences. The Laboratory Manager will ultimately be responsible to the Dean of the School for the organization and administration of the technical activities in Chemistry, the assessment and purchase of chemicals, apparatus and equipment, the appointment of technical personnel covering a wide range of disciplines and to some extent the design and development of new research equipment and apparatus. The person appointed should possess proven administrative and technical ability. A knowledge of chemistry and electronics would be an advantage. The successful applicant, if resident outside Victoria, would receive assistance with the cost of removal, travel and accommodation. He would be expected to contribute to the university’s superannuation scheme. Salary will be subject to negotiation but it is envisaged that it will not be less than 5000 dollars (£2500) per annum.
