NEW PARISH PRIEST

Former Rugby Player

A former Canterbury and Auckland Rugby representative, the Rev. D. J. Hickey, S.M., has begun his duties as the new parish priest of St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Manchester street. He succeeds the Rev. C. R. Crocker, who has been parish prist at St. Mary’s for six years.

After secondary schooling at Sacred Heart College, Auckland, he worked with the New Zealand Railways Department. During this time he represented Auckland. Father Hickey came to Christchurch in 1950 when he spent a year at St. Bede’s College in preparation for his theological studies. During this year he played several games for Canterbury as full-back. Father Hickey began his studies for the priesthood in 1951 at Mount St. Mary’s, Greenmeadows, Hawke’s Bay, and after ordination in 1957. was appointed assistant on the staff of St. Mary’s, Christchurch, where he stayed till transferred to Napier last year.
