EDDIE CALVERT AT JUBILEE BALL

The visiting English trumpeter, Eddie Calvert, joined the celebrations for the St. Andrew’s College jubilee last evening. The 1400 guests at the jubilee ball in Cowles Stadium were entertained by Mr Calvert and a trio of musicians from the Vera Lynn Show for about an hour. Guests danced to the music of the College Pipe band. The stadium was decorated in the college colours, blue and white. Wide muslin banners radiated around the stadium from the centre of the ceiling and floral decorations were hydrangeas and summer flowers, often faithful to the college colours. Guests were received by the convener of the ball committee, Mr R. D. Minson, and Mrs Minson.

They included the rector of St. Andrew’s College, Mr I. T. Galloway, and Mrs Galloway; the chairman of the board of governors, Mr W- J. Mac Gibbon, and Mrs Mac Gibbon; the patron of the Old Boys’ Association, Mr L. W. Stewart, and Mrs Stewart: the president of the association, Mr G. A. M. Hilson, and Mrs Hilson: the president of the Parent-Teach-er Association, Mr J. C. Wilton, and Mrs Wilton. Representatives from other colleges were.—St Bede’s Old Boys’ Association. Mr and Mrs P. C. Floral arrangements were handled by a large committee headed by Mesdames M. Sharp and D. Guild. The official hostess, Mrs Minson, wore a black crepe gown with a cowl back and front bodice finished with crystal beading. Mrs Galloway’s empire line gown in red crystal had a corded lace bodice decorated with jewels and beadwork. Mrs Mac Gibbon’s heavy white faille gown had a high neckline, back and front, and the straight skirt had a fan of pleats in the back.
