Couple Married Seventy Years
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, March 11.
Mr and Mrs Thomas Cockburn of Dunedin will celebrate their seventieth wedding anniversary on Saturday.
The couple were married at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Mornington, on March 12, 1896.
Both have been very active, and although Mr Cockburn was 94 last week and Mrs Cockburn will be 93 in October, they continue to look after themselves in their own home.
“I was a keen gardener, and although I can’t do what I used to. I still do a wee bit,” Mr' Cockburn said proudly. Mrs Cockbum still manages to cook meals. Mr Cockbum arrived at Port Chalmers with his parents from Scotland in 1883. They settled at Clinton where he was educated. Later he joined the railways and be-
came stationmaster at Ranfurly, Waihola, Outram and Milton, relieving officer at Invercargill, and finally traffic inspector at Dunedin. He retired in 1928.
Mrs Cockbum arrived with her parents, Mr and Mrs H. R. Moody, from London in 1874 and settled in Mornington.
Mr Cockbum was secretary of the Retired Railway Superannuitants’ Association for 15 years, and a son is also a superannuitant from the railways. Mr Cockburn is the oldest living member of the Court Enterprise A.O.F. lodge, and has been a member of the Masonic order for more than 50 years. They have a family of five.
