The Half-Crown

Sir, —Without any fuss or fanfare there has departed from our midst a truly loyal friend and, with its passing, we must all be a little poorer. I refer to that most noble of coins—the half-crown. It was a part of our life for generations, a friend in need on many occasions and, if a coin can be said to possess warmth and nobility, I think the halfcrown had these qualities. Before it is too late, before the half-crown completely disappears from our life, I would like to pay tribute to it and say this to it: “Thank you, half-crown, how wonderful it has been to have known you.” —Yours, etc., W. R. DOBSON. March 9, 1966.
