Rear-Admiral F. E. Bakutis, commander of the United States Navy Antarctic support force, will leave Christchurch on Tuesday for Australia. He will visit Melbourne and Canberra. Admiral Bakutis will visit the Governor of Victoria, the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, and have talks with Dr. P. Law, the director of the Antarctic Division of the Australian Department of External Affairs. ’ Mrs Bakutis will accompany her husband. Messrs J. E. Napier and L. A. Hadley, two members of the executive of the Federation of Labour, have been chosen as this year’s workers’ representatives from New Zealand to the annual conference of the International Labour Organisation in Geneva.—(P.A.)
Mr M. R. Keane, of Masterton, editor of the “Wairarapa Times-Age,” has been appointed editor of the new West Coast newspaper, the “Argus Leader.” The appointment was announced by Mr O. H. Jackson, chairman of directors of the Buller-West-land Publishing Company, Ltd.,—(P.A.)
