Tundra-Bellarook For Waikouaiti Double

The Gore stablemates, Tundra and Bellarook, cohid make it a top-weights’ T.A.B. double at the Waikouaiti Racing Club’s meeting tomorrow.

Tundra has earned respect for the Waikouaiti Cup on her strong finishing second to Palisade in the Vice-Regal Handicap, 11 furlongs, on the first day of the Dunedin autumn meeting.

Later that day the eight-year-old Bellarook showed he was still in the top flight of sprinters with a brilliant win under 9-6 in the Shorts Handicap, six furlongs. Tomorrow he has 9-8 in the Toomey Memorial Handicap, also six furlongs. If he runs close to his best form Royal Estate should be one of Tundra’s strongest rivals. Tundra has to give the well - performed Wingatui horse 41b.

Royal Estate lost form on a . summer campaign in Auckland, but the 1964 Dunedin Cup and James Hazlett Gold Cup winner’s recent gallops have left no doubt about his present fitness. RICCARTON FORM

General Gilbert, third topweight with 8-3, is another logical prospect after his winning the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Midsummer Handicap, and his placing behind Red Siren in the Provincial Handicap on the same course three days later. Hushaway and Golden Vanity, third and fourth respectively in the Provincial Handicap, will oppose General Gilbert again. Hushaway has failed once as a sprinter in the meantime. He ran out a mile and a quarter strongly for his

Riccarton third, and might have to be reckoned with if the ground is firm at Waikouaiti. Bellarook will be opposed by some swift sprinters, none of them top-class performers, in the Toomey Memorial. Shipmate beat the Gore horse at Wingatui in December, but has been disappointing since at Trentham and Riccarton. If he does not get stiff competition for the early lead he might be able to last it out. As a last-start winner, : although in weaker class at Motukarara, Sabell is a second Riccarton runner with encouraging form credentials. !
