(N.Z. Press Association! AUCKLAND, Mar. 9. The Marine Department’s new £84,000 fishing research trawler—which arrived in Auckland from Norway today—may be renamed John Scott in recognition of the Minister of Marine’s services to New Zealand’s fishing industry. The fishing industry board; has recommended to the Gov-; ernment that the 92-foot ves-J
sei should be called either the John Scott or W. M. Scott. The purchase of the Nor-wegian-buiit trawler is believed to have been pressed on the Government by the Minister of Marine because he fett strongly that a research vessel was needed to put New Zealand fishing industry on a more sound and practical footing. Fishing industry sources said Mr Scott had made a considerable impact on the fishing industry in his efforts to improve its capabilities. The new trawler, which left Norway late last year for New Zealand, will be slipped for a nre-service overhaul. It is expected a launching ceremony will be held in a fortnight.
r The vessel will be based :. permanently on the east - coast, probably at Tauranga. As well as engaging in act--1 ual fishing for trevalU and » tuna, the trawler will carry » out technological research i and demonstrate the latest t fishing techniques to fisheri men.
