MAIREHAU H.S.

797 Pupils On Roll The number of pupils at Mairehau High School was 797, the headmaster (Mr A. B. Ryan) reported to a meeting of the board of governors yesterday. Of these, 393 were boys and 404 were girls, Mr Ryan said, but for the first time there were more boys in the third form than girls. The school roll comprised 273 third-formers, 262 fourthformers, 190 fifth-formers and 70 sixth-formers. “I have been assured that provision will be made in the 1966 programme for permanent classrooms at Mairehau.” he said. These, he hoped, would consist of extensions providing a sewing room, art room and a general purpose classroom. Consequent modifications to present art rooms would provide two rooms for the English department.

“Plans have not been completed for the new libraries for Nelson type schools, and there is little prospect of any Immediate action in this matter. Extensions to the staff-room are also unlikely until the problem has been solved in larger but similartype schools elsewhere.” The fund for the new school gymnasium had now reached almost £4OOO. and the Parentteacher Association was confident that the additional amount required would be raised before the end of the year, Mr Ryan said.
