Ilam Traffic Not Worrying Dept.

Although complaints have come from residents, the Transport Department does not believe that the traffic situation at the University of Canterbury’s Ham campus is sueh that the Waimairi County Council should be recommended to take action. The department has been asked to look into congestion that occurs on the Clyde road-Creyke road crossing at peak times. Inspectors are making regular patrols to check on parking, and they are also on the look-out, especially, for bad driving by motor-cyclists and scooter riders. “Routine Complaint” “We regard the complaint about traffic congestion as a routine one,” said a departmental spokesman. “It will be dealt with in the same way as we deal with complaints of a like nature.

“It is suspected that there is some impatience at delays caused by university traffic turning from Clyde road into Crekye road, or crossing over the intersection. “We have never had anything to do with parking. That is a matter for the Waimairi County Council and the university.” Yesterday morning, cars were parked on both sides of Crevke road from near Clyde road to Montana avenue, where there are no restrictions. One of the council’s Transport Department inspectors said that there had been complaints from residents about vehicles being left parked across drive-ways. “We have taken action where necessary,” he said. “It is fair to point out that only part of the planned off-street narking is yet available on the campus. We think that things will have settled down by April. There is no need to make any recommendation to the council.” As the site becomes free of contractors’ plant and vehicles. Ham will progressivelv nrovide parking for up to 1280 vehicles. Only a fraction of this space is now available in three parking blocks. A year ago, the council considered the installation of narking meters, particularly in Creyke road. Nothing was settled. With night lectures at the university, it was felt that visitors to homes in the area would be penalised. Discuscussions on traffic have continued between the council and the university. One point that may lead to an eventual parking ban in Creyke road is that it is designated as one of the main feeder roads in the master traffic plan.
