Malaysia Seeking More Scholarships To N.Z.
(New Zealand Press Association)
HAMILTON, March 7. Malaysia wants to send more students to New Zealand and more Colombo Plan scholarships are being sought from the New Zealland Government. This is one of the purposes of a two-month visit to New Zealand by. the State Secretary of Sabah (Mr J. Dusing), who was in Hamilton today. Scholarships were urgently needed for candidates to medical schools but in this field he was having little success because the educational facilities could scarcely cater for New Zealand candidates, Mr Dusing said. Malaysia hoped the scholarship scheme would soon be broadened to allow Malaysian secondary school male students as well as university and traininc callee. students
to study in New Zealand, Mr Dusing said. Sabah and the rest of Malaysia were developing educational! facilities. But these were not sufficiently developed to cater for the great number of students who wanted to gain a first class secondary education before entering universities. Mr Dusing said the scholarship scheme in spite of its value, was causing some problems in Malaysia. Students were sent to New Zealand to gain education for jobs in their own country but many were staying tn take extension courses. This was leaving gaps in Malaysia’s professional structure and upsetting the advancement plans made by the Malaysian Government, he •aid.
