Christ’s Gain Advantage
After some early shocks against a hostile attack, Christ’s College recovered to score 160 runs in Its annual cricket match against Nelson College at Hagley yesterday. Christ’s College lost two quick wickets to M. Hughes and a useful partnership between M. Hobbs and J. Utley was cut short by W. Sharplin. But J. Wright, A. Morten, D. Saunders and S. Read all reached the 20’s and although the side never looked like making a big total, respectabiltlty was achieved.
Only four bowlers were called upon by Nelson and, of these, M. Hughes was the most hardworked and the most successful.
Nelson wickets fell steadily in the last hour and a half and the pace of N. Ackroyd and the swerve of H. Munro kept the runs down.
Although Nelson had averted the follow-on by stumps. It had lost five wickets for 66 runs in the slightly murky light and Christ’s had gained a definite advantage with one day's play remaining. Scores were:
Christ’s College 160 (J. Wright 27, A. Morten 27, D. Saunders 26; M. Hughes 53/4, P. Whitehead 21/2). Nelson College 66/5 (J. Ellis 15; H. Munro 16/2, A. Taylor 7/1).
