MAUGER WINS SPECIAL SERIES

The Christchurch international solo rider, Ivan Mauger, defeated the former world champion, Ronnie Moore, in a special match race series at the Templeton Speedway last evening.

This was a fitting climax to Mauger’s first season at Templeton. Tomorrow he leaves for England where he will once again captain the Newcastle Diamonds. Mauger met Moore, the former world finalist, G. Mardon, and the winner of the New Zealand championship a week ago, R. Andrews, of England, in three four-lap scratch races. He won them all in very fast time but the most impressive feature ot the contest was the rate of improvement shown by Moore as the racing progressed. Moore started magnificently and forced Mauger to accept second position for about half the last race, a feat which no other rider in the country has been able to do in a scratch race, this season. Slipping Clutch A slipping clutch prevented Moore offering any challenge to the other riders in the opening race and he finished

last. Andrews, showing great determination after his eclipse on Saturday night, was a close second, with Mardon third. The second race provided Mauger with a runaway victory. Andrews was second, with Moore a close third. Mauger’s time, 80.8 sec, was the fastest of the night In the third race Mauger had to use every bit of skill he possessed to get past Moore. Afterwards, Mauger said: “I think that there would have been a bit of a difference if Ronnie and Geoff had had a few rides.’ “It is very nice to be back on the cinders. I wish I could have done better, but with three years off you need a bit of practice before you get going again,” Moore said. He would probably ride at Templeton again. One of the finest races in the programme apart from the international events was the opening scratch race for motorcycles, won by M. Burt, only Inches ahead of T. Black and A. Brown. The defending champion, T. Hall, was well beaten In the eight-lap speedcar scratch race counting towards the South Island championship by R. Clive.
